50 years old Nakayama Hatahoshi Maruka Natural Whetstone 1311.2g (2Lb. 14.4oz. ) 205mmX78mX33mm #10000 or higher grit
It has Kiita with madder red color.
It is a very large size old Maruka, and it has very fine particles like silk.
This Nakayama Hatahoshi Maruka Whetstone is an old stock, and it is from an old barber where is located on Nigata-Ken, and the owner of the barber is a friend of Mr. Kosuke Iwasaki who is founder of Iwasaki Razor.
It should be older than 50 years old, found from old locked cabinet.
It must be over 60 years old, because Hatahoshi (flag and star) mark sounds me during war era which is in WWII or before WWII.
It is good old days very high quality Nakayama Maruka which had lots of supply, and it is very hard to come by nowadays.
Nakayama whetstone is finest whetstone that is mined in Kyoto for almost 900 years ago.
I think the mine had been closed more than 30 years ago.
It had been very important as military affairs, because it is sharpener for weapons, so the mountain had been protected and controlled by the Emperor of Japan or Shogun or Japanese Government for hundreds years.
Only Honma family could have mined the mountain for a long time.
After Samurai era, Kato Mine Company owned the Nakayama mine, and Hatanaka Whetstone company put on the Maruka stamp on the high quality Nakayama.
The owner of Hatanaka company used to work for Kato Mine Company as a manager, so he knew everything about Nakayama.
Two of stamps on the top are Hatanaka whetstone company stamps, which are registered Junshinshouhonyama stamp, and registered Hatahoshi stamp.
Nakayama Maruka is highly sought finishing whetstone even in Japan, because the mine was closed, and high quality ones are run out, and it is harder and harder to find.
It is ideal razor whetstone which it is very hard whetstone, and it has fine molecules.
Probably #10000 or higher grit with the same as artificial whetstone.
It should be one of highest grit Nakayama whetstone.
Natural whetstone has wider capacity than artificial whetstone has, and actually, we do not know until sharpen blade on the hone for a while.
Because artificial whetstone molecules do not break down to smaller sizes, but
Natural whetstone molecules are possible to break down to smaller sizes, and those molecules are mixed with sharpened steel molecules, and make Jigane as suitable Jigane color, and Hagane as suitable Hagane color.
It is natural mystics.
